USB Safely Remove 4.2 Released: Elegant UI & Win 7 support!

We are happy to announce that new version of USB Safely Remove 4.2 is publicly available! In the new version we have invested heavily in UI improvements, stability and Windows 7 compatibility. Find below the full list of changes.

New Elegant Look And Feel

A picture is worth a thousand of words, so just look below to see the changes by your own eyes.

Fixing Drive Letter For A Device

Windows may assign different drive letters to a certain device, so you are not sure what drive letter will have your flash drive on this connection.Usually it's a bit annoying but it doesn't prevent you from working. The problem will arise when you need to start non-portable applications from the flash drive or you wish to ask a desktop application to store data to your external drive. In this case the device must have a fixed drive letter that isn't changed amongst different connections.

USB Safely Remove 4.2 resolves that problem, allowing you to fix a drive letter to a device. Just open your device properties, switch to the "Drive properties" tab, choose the required drive letter and check "Fix drive letter" option. From now on your device will always stay with this drive letter and none of the other devices will occupy this letter, even when your device is not connected.

One-click "Scan For Hardware Changes"

USB Safely Remove gets along not only with USB drives but with SATA (eSATA) devices as well. However, some eSATA drives cannot be automatically detected by Windows on connection. You have to run "Scan For Hardware Changes" from the Windows Device Manager in order to see your drive in Explorer. You know it's annoying to do so many clicks in order to get to the Device Manager so we added this ability to the quick stop menu.

Stop All Devices At Once

If you are in a hurry and\or need to disconnect all external drives at once, you will find this feature extremely useful. Instead of clicking several times to the menu to stop devices one at a time, you can press the "Stop all" button and the program will stop all of the visible devices on the stopping menu.

Windows 7 Full Compatibility

We have conducted extensive testing of the program under the newest version of Windows and now you can benefit from using USB Safely Remove under Windows 7, both the 32 and 64-bit versions.

Minor But Useful Improvements

  • Displaying taskbar button for the most windows
  • You can optionally show number of devices in the tray icon (see Options -> Look and Feel)
  • The tray icon became gray if there are no devices to stop
  • Hotkey for stopping the device can return it back

Bug Fixes

  • The program seriously slowed down Windows XP 64 bit system startup
  • Fixed some bugs of autorun feature
  • PNG images were loosing alpha-channel when were loaded as device images
  • And some other minor bugs...
Update from 10/26/2009: 4.2 hot-fix 1
We have fixed some bugs found by our users in the version 4.2 final:
  • "Scan For Hardware Changes" and "Stop All" buttons could change their horizontal\vertical relative positions
  • The program could display "Cannot connect to service" message on startup
  • The program could stop additional devices when stopping a certain one
  • Some languages updated: Bulgarian, Dutch-Netherlands, Finnish, Hebrew, Romanian, Swedish

"We have hardly tested the

"We have hardly tested the program under the newest version of Windows" ? That doesn't sound good. Is that what it's meant to say?
Anyway, UI looks great & I'm all for new functionality! =D

I noticed this too. In

I noticed this too. In English, saying "hardly" does not mean that you did HARD testing; it means you tested it only 1%; I think what you meant to say is "we have conducted extensive testing of the program under Windows 7" - if that is what you meant.

Excellent software.

Guys, many thanks for the note! I have changed the phrase as you suggested.

Can you please make a

Can you please make a "themeless" option that just uses colors from the current theme color config?

I really don't like the new look, plus the text is hardly visible when using clear font colors. Using it with any other theme than the default aero or classic view just burns my eyes.

Reinstalling 4.1!

Yeah, with dark themes

Yeah, with dark themes doesn't look that good.

+1 for a classic view option.

Excellent Software!. Good job on keeping up with the times. A lot of companies still aren't up-to-date with todays 64 bit operating systems. You guys are current. Maybe other companies will learn from you!.

Thank you!.

I've noticed a bug that is

I've noticed a bug that is rather annoying guys. When I go to options and check or uncheck the "Show All Devices" option then the new One-click "Scan For Hardware Changes" option tends to appear to disappear and the new Stop All Devices At Once option moves to line up with the topmost device.

In my particular case I am running a Windows XP Pro 32-bit SP3. I also noticed that if I stop the program and restart it then the new options appear correctly, however they do not "fix" if just toggle the setting. I've reproduced this several times at this point.

Also, I haven't forgot about the Help File editing. I got about half way through it and I haven't had a chance to go back to it. Hopefully soon though.

Anyone know why, when re-awakening a drive or device I always get a windows error prompt about how, 'windows can't find "your device"...etc'? I get that, even though USB Safely Remove has found "the device" and is getting it ready?

When I re-enable the USB device which is ejected by USBSR WITHOUT physically taking out, my Bluetooth mouse does not respond for few seconds and it is recorded by Windows in the Event Viewer. Just wanted to say this is great software, it seriously makes my life easier. I haven't updated yet as I got it free (I do believe you were running a promo), but when I have some spare change I certainly will (after verifying it runs right). Just so you know, I give another vote to having an option to revert to classic styling.
